Are celebrities running scared of fashion?

2009.01.13

Is it just me or was this year’s Golden Globes a little lack lustre? There just didn’t seem to be any memorable fashion moments – good or bad, and for me, Award Season is almost as important for fashion as Fashion Week.

With top designers clamoring to dress these celebs, is there really any excuse for playing it safe? Are celebrities so frightened of ending up on a worst dressed list that they are running scared of taking a few fashion risks?

On the night, everyone kind of looked the same. The biggest trend was for strapless or one shouldered dresses and I was really surprised by the lack of colour this year, especially when bright, vibrant colours are such a big trend for 2009; black or white was the order of the day. Makeup, hair and jewellery were just simple, simple, simple.

For me, the best dressed ladies of the night were the very few who actually dared to stand out. Cameron Diaz looked pretty in pink – though some have commented that she looked like a pink blancmange, and Maggie Gyllenhall, who wore an on trend animal-print column dress. Both ladies have been heavily criticised in the media for their choices but that is the risk you take when bucking conformity.

I agree they need to take a few risks. Although nude type colours are also a big trend for 09 but what the dresses lack in colour should be made up for with shape, cut, texture and detail.
