Red Heads are hot!
2009.01.05
After years of swapping my hair colour from chocolate brown to blond, I have decided to embrace my Celtic roots and opt for flaming red hair. Inspired by Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud fame, Lily Cole, Marcia Cross and Lindsay Lohan (pre-peroxide), I have also banished the fake tan to the rubbish bin vowing never again to go out patchy and smelling like day old biscuits. I am now revelling in my pale skin and flowing red locks. It is such a striking look and in my opinion, just as beautiful as the conventional bleached blond bombshell.
Case in point, did you see Lily Cole looking amazing on the cover of October’s 2008 German Playboy? The shoot caused a lot of controversy for Miss Cole, with calls for Marks and Spencer to cancel their contract with her. Honestly, the fuss caused by a bit of nudity!
Nicola Roberts is also a flame haired beauty with the fashion world at her feet - recently launching Dainty Doll, a make-up line catering for pale skin. Nicola admitted to struggling with her looks at first, constantly feeling like the ugly duckling of the Girls Aloud group “I was tall, skinny, with red hair and the whitest skin you’ve ever seen - standing next to four of the most gorgeous girls in Britain.” but she soon came to her senses, throwing away the fake tan and embracing what Mother Nature gave her. As a result the girl is turning into something of a fashion icon with rumors circulating that none other than Vivienne Westwood is interested in having Nicola model for her.
So if you are feeling like a change in 2009, I would highly recommend reaching for the sun block and becoming a fashion forward red head.
Top 5 make-up tips for red heads:
- Avoid Pink toned foundations. Pink tones will make your face look redder than it naturally is – go for beige or white foundations. Don’t worry about looking washed out, that’s what your blusher is for. Nicola Roberts Dainty Doll range offers a selection of excellent bases available at www.asos.com
- I like using a baby pink blusher; Benefits Benetint is really good as you can build up the colour and doesn’t look chalky like some powder blushers.
- For a day look stick with earthy eye shadow shades, light browns and rich chocolates look stunning. For a more dramatic look gold, plum or green looks striking against red heads.
- Dramatic smokey eyes look hot on a red head. If you have dark red hair then, you can take black mascara and liner. Take inspiration from Lily Cole’s Sixties look on the cover of German Play Boy.
- Lipstick is best in nude or vibrant shades. In the evening I am partial to a hot pink lip as I love the clashing pink against red, my favourite at the moment is Rimmel London’s Moisture Renew in Funtime Fushia. Avoid red-orange and peach like the plague.
