Leather trend brings out the “A” lists kinky side

2009.10.20

Blame YSL and their caged heels. They sparked the penchant for what my friends and I like to call “S&M” chic; you’ve probably seen them all over the high street – “hooker” heels, which are at least 6 inches, platformed and covered in anything from studded straps to leopard print.

So what was the next logical fashion forward step??? Leather clad outfits of course! It has to be said that there is something rebellous and super sexy about leather when it’s done right. Angelina Jolie and Kylie Minogue have both been seen out and about looking fab in tight fitting, strapeless leather dresses. Angelina Jolie wore her black leather dress at the Hollywood Premiere of Inglorious Bastards – designed by Michael Kors. Take that Diane Kruger!

However, get the leather trend wrong and risk looking like a menopausal fifty year old who thinks they still have “it”. Case in point Victoria Beckham attending an event at her sons school. Oh the shame. Victoria’s leather Jacket is by Balmain and the trousers are D squared. All in one leather is disasterous, especially combined with monstrous shoulder pads. Too many trends…

When it comes to leather, less is definitely more. The look really comes down to combining the harshness of the leather and with softer fabrics. Teaming leather with softer girlie fabrics is a good way to go, for example a black leather pencil skirt with a chiffon shirt. Or if you are a little shy try a brightly coloured pair of leather gloves. Very Dior Autumn/Winter 2009.
