First New York, then London, now its Milan’s turn. Milan Fashion Week has started and one of my favourite Italian designers, Etro, took to the stage today to show their Spring/Summer 2011 Ready to Wear collection. It was a vibrant 70s affair; full of the kind of grown up holiday clothes I dream of, from the all in one mustard yellow jumpsuit to the flowing, floral print maxi dresses. Etro, simply do the best printed dresses.

“Multicoloured in a natural palette that was reflected in the food on offer and the patterns around the catwalk entrance to further underline the point that we were being welcomed into the Etro world (everybody gets a cushion to take home from an Etro show), they came in mustard or plum, green, indigo, turquoise, khaki, yellow or brown: cotton dresses falling off one shoulder from soft peasant necklines, tunic dresses striped in black and white prints alternated with gold mesh and trousers that were fitted and flared over block heeled platforms under matching strapless tops – the Seventies are never far from an Etro girl’s inspiration.”

Ultimately, my favourite piece from the collection were these gorgeous horizontal stripped shorts in burnt orange, blue and indigo. In theory, a clashing nightmare but they actually looked ultra chic – great with a tan and wedges. Roll on summer 2011!
The collection was full of beautiful prints – in particular a muted grey and pink water-coloured bubble print and a gorgeous black and white tie dye print.

A running theme throughout the show was a fringed collar, which looked stifling and uncomfortable on the models. Definitely a case of just because you can doesn’t mean you should! The fringed detail was seen more successfully on skirts and shoulder pieces.

My favourite look of the collection was a simple strapless black jumpsuit which was cinched in at the waist with a bronze metal belt and tucked into platform black suede ankle boots. This will probably be the biggest seller of the collection.

Yesterday, Victoria Beckham showed her Spring/Summer Ready-to-wear 2011 collection at New York fashion week. Speaking to Vogue UK, Victoria explained why she chose New York Fashion week to show her line:

“I LOVE New York, and I live in America now; this is my home,” – so said Victoria Beckham when we asked her why she shows in NYC as opposed to London, Milan or Paris. “Well, this is closest to my home,” said the LA resident with a laugh.

The collection did have an Upper East Side feel to it and there were some classic “Victoria Beckham” silhouettes in the collection – fitted, body conscious dresses designed to show off a woman’s femininity. You can easily imagine Mrs. Beckham being snapped in most of this collection.

“So there were exposed zippers tracing the spine and delicate seams highlighting the small of the back or the curve of the torso and abdomen to subtly sexy effect, done in luscious shades of Cadillac (aka, blush) pink, mandarin orange and a great holographic silver lame.”

But there were also a few surprises; living in LA has obviously had a knock on affect to Mrs Beckham’s design aesthetic. Victoria showed a gorgeous, loose fitting, purple silk shirt dress which tied loosely in the front. This dress looked both effortless and stylish. I would definitely like to see more of this in future collections. She also played tentatively with volume and shapes, giving a little nod to the 1960s.

“Beckham also channelled the Sixties in a suite of body skimming shift dresses, and paid homage to the classic fit-and-flare silhouette in several very pretty cocktail frocks.”

All in all, a very successful, inoffensive and well thought out ready-to-wear collection.

According to the fashion bible, thou shall not wear socks and sandals. I remember my French teacher in school wearing the classic socks and sandals combo and looking particularly tragic – but recently there has been a shift in what was once a big fashion no-no.

I’m not sure exactly where the trend started (definitely not in my third year French class!), whether it is down to street style bloggers or the runway (socks and sandals where everywhere at the 2010 shows) but now adding a cute little pair of ankle socks to an outfit, makes for a well constructed look. When done right, socks and sandals can downplay an outfit that may be considered too overtly sexual, therefore, making something more suitable for night time, day time appropriate. Skyscrapper open toed heels + socks = daytime wearable.

One of my favourite British Models, Daisy Lowe, is due to debut her first fashion collection. The enviable beauty will bring her unique sense of style to the masses by teaming up with French high street brand Morgan. According to Vogue.com, the collection will be called the “Night Owl range” and “will feature 15 pieces including both apparel and accessories at an economical price point. Lowe’s line will comprise a selection of dresses, jewellery, footwear and bags.”

Sadly, the range will only be available in France, across 25 Morgan stores in November 2010. However, due to the marvels of modern technology, we will be able to join our French friends and shop to our hearts content on the Morgan website.

The animal print trend refuses to die, and why should it? Designers love it, as do the A-list, and while head to toe animal print is a big no no - celebs like Leighton Meester know that a flash of animal print will go a long way, making an otherwise boring outfit look fresh and edgy...

Personally, I’m in love with this gorgeous leopard print skirt from Whistles.

But if you prefer something a little more subtle then make like Leighton and go for a animal print scarf like this one from Dorothy Perkins.

First, Heidi Klum takes to the Victoria Secrets runway over the weekend, looking amazing a mere month after giving birth to baby daughter, Lou. Then the winter issue of id magazine is released, showing not one, not two but three naked former supermodels on the front cover. It’s as if the 1990s are back – Claudia, Eva and Helena all look fantastic, regardless of the fact they are in their late thirties, early forties. Hell, I know women in their early twenties who would throw their best friend under a bus to look half as good.

It use to be that a model’s career was well and truly over by the time she hit thirty but times they are a changing with the old “supers” continuing to land big contracts with the likes of Prada, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.

Amanda Wakeley had lost her company in 1998 when, after her divorce, she was forced to sell the business. Since then the Amanda Wakeley label has endured countless different owners, with Wakeley staying on board as Creative Director.

When the brand was put up for sale and subsequently sold in December, Wakeley was told that she was out of a job. But in March she was advised by the then owner, Jason Granite that the mainline collection was up for sale and with the backing of her new partner Hugh Morrison, Wakeley bought back her label.

Spring/Summer 2010 was Amanda’s comeback show at London Fashion Week. The show was eagerly anticipated; her Indian influenced Spring/Summer 10 collection receiving rave reviews from the fashion press.

The fashion industry is notoriously snobby. Being known as a "commercial" is the kiss of death for any model. Even supermodels it would seem aren't immune to this snobbishness.

The fashion industry is notoriously snobby. Being known as a “commercial” is the kiss of death for any model. Even supermodels it would seem aren’t immune to this snobbishness. Karl Lagerfeld has recently been quoted as saying “I don’t know Heidi Klum. She was never known in France. Claudia Schiffer also doesn’t know who she is.”

Only the edgiest and strongest models get to walk high fashion runways and rock high end, editorial magazines. So seeing Miranda Kerr, the Victoria Secrets model, walk the Balenciaga runway a few weeks ago at Paris Fashion week was something of a shock. Victoria Secrets is as commercial as they come, attracting a large male fanbase. Miranda did however look amazing for Balenciaga and is continuing the transition between being a commercial model and editorial model quite successfully if the photos from November’s issue of V magazine is anything to go by.

Dressed provocatively in Proenza Schouler, Dolce and Gabanna, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Miu Miu, the ‘Pin Me Up, Pin Me Down’ shoot also features Ana Beatriz Barros, a fellow Victoria Secrets model, as postmodern pin up girls. The photos were taken by Willy Vanderperre and styled by Olivier Rizzo.
